From Just Us: An American Conversation
by Claudia Rankine

White is living within brick-and-mortar, walking off
all others' loss, exhaustion, aggrieved
exposure, dispossessed despair—

in daylight white hardens its features.

My favorite Claudia Rankine moment happened during a Trump rally. Seated in full view of the cameras, Johari Osayi Idusuyi decided to read her copy of Citizen. The clip of her arguing with the people around her caught media attention.

It always feels appropriate to include Rankine’s works in these posts, especially when I wanted to focus on what the Trump Reich is trying to gut and sweep under the rug.

You can find this poem alongside Rankine’s lyric essay, Just Us: An American Conversation (affiliate).
